FLAHERTY, Robert, 85, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011. He was born November 10, 1925, in Winchester, Mass., to Michael and Harriet Hodge Flaherty, and older sister, Frances. He was raised in Portland, Maine, where he graduated from Cheverus Classical High School, which was staffed by Jesuit priests. During World War II, he served on the submarine Torsk, which sank the last two Japanese ships in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He retired 20 years later to Tampa, where he worked in the U.S. Post Office until a second retirement. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Connie (Spoto) Flaherty; son, Michael and his wife, Gretchen; son, Robert B. and his wife, Keiko; and daughter, Christina Zapf and her husband, Bryan. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren, Rachel, Richard, Catherine, Christopher, Peter, Evan and Emily. His devotion to his family and church was a fine example to us all. A funeral Mass for the repose of his soul will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Church of the Incarnation, 8220 W. Hillsborough Ave., Tampa. Family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories. Published in TBO.com on August 2, 2011
